Forgotten Bookmarks

It’s hereditary.As I’ve reached a certain age, I’ve realized this tendency has been handed down from generations.

One of the most interesting books I’ve ever had the pleasure of exploring was my late grandfather’s journal.I never knew the man.He died when my mother was just eighteen years old.This journal has survived, however, as a precious look into a man who is otherwise known only through my mother’s stories.

While the words he wrote are priceless, I found the myriad of little things stuck into the pages to be just as revealing.He had a fondness for tucking things into the pages or inside the covers - train ticket stubs, notes, photos, letters and whatnot.The book holds a small treasure trove of bits he thought important enough to keep.

My mother is the same way and now I too, find my appointment books and planners stuffed with things I want to keep or need to remember.Nothing is there because of some earth-shattering significance that I hope future generations will discover.Nah.The stuff is just the minutia of everyday living.

I’m sure most of us who tuck things into books think nothing of it.In fact, there’s a fellow named Michael Popek who has created a website about the things people leave behind in books.He works in a used bookshop and has the unique opportunity to sift through old tomes.His website, forgottenbookmarks.com, features the items he has gathered as a result.

I found the website fascinating, probably because I can both relate to the people who squirreled away things in books and because I really enjoy the treasure-hunt aspect of finding something unexpectedly.

Gymnastics

This evening, Peeper and I took a free demo cla*s atВ a gymnastics and dance studio near our house.

She loooooved it, but I think that instead of enrollingВ there, we'll probably take what we a*sume is a very similar cla*s at the city recreation center, starting in a few weeks, because it's cheaper.

(This place is $40 forВ a yearly membership, and $47/month for the cla*s, starting and stopping at any point.The rec center is $39 for a six-week session.That's kind of a big difference.)

The rec center's comparable cla*s is for "18 months to under 3 years," and the first session ends, literally, two days before she turns three (!) so she'd be about the oldest in the cla*s.

They have another cla*s, for three year olds, called "Sporties for Shorties" (I love that!) that teaches the basics of soccer, basketball and tee ball.I think she'd really like that, but I don't know that she'd be ready to go right into it the week after her birhtday, especially since it's not a Mommy and Me.

But, I'm thinking I'll talk to the instructor of the other cla*s and see what s/he thinks, and maybe it would be best anyway to take a break from it and put her in that after the holidays, or even the spring, when she's a lot three-er.

In the meantime, though, she did great tonight.She (mostly) followed directions and (mostly) listened to the teacher.She had no problem marching off after the teacher to go get a ball, or running over to the ball bin with the other kids to return it, or letting the teacher take her around the room to demonstrate all the "stations."

At one point, the teacher even told me that "She seems like she's really athletic!"

I tried not to laugh out loud.

She was not really getting the concept of a logroll.About the time she figure it out, they switched to a front roll, which totally confused her.If we do decide to go ahead and take this cla*s, I think I will find a different time/day to go, though, because there was this one little girl in there who's taken the cla*s before, but surely that's the extend of her gymnastics training, because she's three years old, but her mother is clearly Gymnastics Mom.

She was using all the proper terminology for everything (I a*sume.What do I know.) and was all over this poor kid for the wh*le hour, squawking at her to do every little thing rigth when the teacher said it, and perfectly.

Really?

I'm sorry that your gymnastics days are over, lady, and you're old and fat now, but let your kid have some fun.She's three f**king years old.

I can't listen to that week in and week out.Seriously, I will sign up for a less convenient time rather than having to be in the cla*s with her.Can.Not.Handle.

Promession: A new green alternative to cremation

Another «green» alternative to cremation is in the pipeline.Susanne Wiigh-Masak, a Swedish biologist, has for a decade proposed a technology she calls Promession.

The process involves a fully automated and patented machine.Coffins are fed in one end, and the body removed from the coffin within the unit and then treated with liquid nitrogen.

The body is then vibrated until the body fragments, after which the remains are dried and refined further, and then pa*sed through filters to remove metals, including dental amalgam.The remains are then poured into a square biodegradable coffin, again automatically, for shallow burial

For Ms Wiigh-Masak, it is all about preparing the body for this shallow burial, a process which says is akin to composting.It was in her garden on the island of Lyr on Sweden’s west coast, that the idea came to her.

«It only takes two to three weeks before the kitchen and garden waste is soil so this is what inspired me to really see if not only the kitchen and garden waste but also everything organic, including us, could be treated this way to really become soil,» she told BBC News.

So far, the technology has only been tested on pigs, with one pig even being fitted with a hip replacement prior to death, to test the efficacy with which the metal joint could be removed during the process.

Ms Wiigh-Masak is now confident commercial operations will begin soon, after the Swedish government promised to introduce new legislation that would allow individuals to use a «burial tax» paid by all Swedes not just for cremation and burial, but also for Promession.
